Self-publishing has opened doors for countless authors who want to share their stories with the world. If you’re an aspiring children’s book author, like me, you’ve probably considered this route. It offers creative control, quicker timelines, and higher royalties, but it also comes with its challenges. In this post, I’ll share some of the most valuable tips and tricks I’ve learned from my self-publishing journey with The Good Deed Gang series.

Understand Your Target Audience

Before you start writing, get to know your target audience. What do children enjoy? What messages resonate with parents? I wrote The Good Deed Gang to promote kindness, teamwork, and positive values. Understanding what parents and children are looking for helped shape my stories.

Invest in High-Quality Illustrations

Children’s books rely heavily on illustrations. Find an illustrator whose style complements your story. Whether you prefer minimalistic or vibrant, colorful designs, invest in high-quality artwork. This not only enhances your story but also attracts readers.

Edit, Edit, and Edit Again

Even the best stories need refining. Edit your manuscript multiple times, and then have it professionally edited. Typos and awkward sentences can detract from your story. A polished manuscript is crucial to gaining credibility.

The Ultimate Guide to Self-Publishing Children’s Books: Tips and Tricks

Choose the Right Printing Platform

Research different self-publishing platforms like Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, or Blurb. Consider factors like print quality, distribution channels, and royalty structures.

I used IngramSpark for The Good Deed Gang, as it provided excellent print quality and access to both online and brick-and-mortar bookstores.

Build Your Author Platform

Start building your online presence early. Use social media, a blog, or a website (like my MaditaKBooks.com) to connect with readers and share your journey. Consistent engagement will create anticipation for your book launch.

Plan Your Marketing Strategy

Marketing your book is essential. Reach out to influencers, bloggers, and reviewers who focus on children’s literature. Plan your book launch, use social media ads, and consider local events. With The Good Deed Gang set to release in April 2025, my marketing strategy involves engaging with my audience months before the launch.

Never Give Up

Self-publishing can be a tough road. There will be rejections, frustrations, and setbacks. But if you believe in your story, keep pushing forward. Persistence is key.

Self-publishing allows you to bring your story to life on your own terms. With the right strategy, your children’s book can reach readers all over the world. And who knows, your book might just become the next big hit in children’s literature!
